Ok, just to preface, I haven’t actually watched this show (I didn’t want anyone thinking I sit around watching Fox at night) but it’s been the discussion of several of my friends. Are you smarter than a 5th grader? is the brand new show that hilariously points out the stupidity of adults. (its on tonight so maybe i’ll have a go at the game and see how far I get against a 9-year-old)
With adults answering questions like, how many sides are there on a trapezoid and which country shares the longest border with the US? The 5th graders are beating the pants off them! Now as hilarious as it is to see these adults fumble with basic geography, it is sort of sad because the questions actually make me think twice about my answers – am I that out of touch with my elementary school education? I actually can’t remember my 4th grade teachers name – so maybe I am.
But kids aren’t just smarter with the trivia questions – A 6 year old I know is programming his own computer games with GameMaker software and his mother is still trying to program the VCR.
Today parents have to learn how to use cell phone, instant messanging, and social networking sites just to keep up with their kids. And they are terrified of what their kids will discover if they don’t watch their every move on the computer. But those technologically-advanced parents (most likely the people reading this) should take PC Magazine’s Sascha Segan’s advice and buy their baby a laptop.
Wow. And all I had was PBS.
